I.
The European scene is often described in comparative terms. It is seen as secondary in influence, visibility, and cultural output. What this framing ignores is that Europe has developed its own system over decades: a dense infrastructure of spaces, networks, and cross-border structures that has allowed this culture to thrive.
Yet infrastructure does not imply identity and it is rarely articulated what this system constitutes—in particular, when it is not measured against external reference points. Too often, discussion remains stuck in comparison.
II.
Leitmotif assumes that this identity exists. It might not always be explicitly verbalized, but it is embedded in how artists and scenes function, and persist over time.
This publication is concerned with this internal logic—not just as mythology or aesthetic, but as an operating system of relationships and practices.

III.
The first conversation with Christopher Schmidt (Giver, Between Bodies), published on April 20, 2026, is not an introduction to a scene, but a case in point of how it already functions. It reveals an identity shaped by continuity and solidarity.
Leitmotif aims to describe this identity more precisely and take it seriously, together with its own conditions. In doing so, Leitmotif is not a periodical, but is realeased whenever time and circumstances allow.
